Letters and diaries of Allen Benton Morse, father of Marion Davis, of Ionia County, Mich. on his student days at the Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University), his Civil War service, contemporary political issues and public opinions associated with his career as chief justice of Michigan, politician, and U.S. consul to Glasgow, in particular opinions on the 1892 gubernatorial and national elections. Civil War letters written to Allen Benton Morse by his brother Joe Morse and another brother; letters and diaries of John L. Morse, Mrs. Davis' grandfather who moved with his family from Ionia County, Mich to Wright County, Iowa relating to his experience as a gold prospector in California (1850-1853) and describing contemporary conditions in Iowa. Correspondence and papers of Marion Davis on the history of Mackinac Island, the Morse family genealogy, genealogical notes on over 100 other families, including Drake, May and VanAllen, along with manuscripts of her writings: a history of the Bates family of Detroit; a biography of Catherine Ernest of Detroit; articles supporting Alexander Henry's reputation as a historian; and a defense of General James Wilkinson. Also included, diaries of Nancy Wells Davis and Cadelia Wells Cook (1852-1853, 1862-1865) and photo album titled "Mackinaw."
